Deadpool & Wolverine
Is this a perfect movie? No way near. Is this kind of everything I wanted and expected from this film? Yes, and I think it perfectly accomplished what they wanted to do with this. Sure, it's a cameo fuckfest, light on plot, filled to the brim with humour and marvel references, all things for which other recent marvel movies have been criticised for, but I think it's so appropriate for what this film is. It's a sendoff to marvel's past and an ushering in of the future with the x-men.
What kind of was surprising was just how kind they were to the Fox universe. It weirdly served as a good ending to those films and was able to acknowledge that we wouldn't have the MCU were it not for that universe. I guess this isn't that surprising considering how Fiege got his start but still it's a very nice cap to a universe while also being able to have fun and laugh at how dumb it was.
Now being a part of the MCU, the fourth wall breaks are able to poke fun at the House of Mouse and the film doesn't pull its punches, the humour is very much still in line with the original instalments, but I think the complete no holds barred approach here works so well. It's hard to go at least five minutes without a full blown laugh. I do think this will entirely be dependent on your sense of humour, and honestly more so whether you go in wanting to laugh or not, I sense a lot of people on the Marvel hate train will go into this with predetermined opinions.
Following on from this, the people who think Marvel has become a slave to fandom and banks on cameos I also foresee not having fun with this. Simply put the cameos in this are gratuitous, but it works in the context of this film. It is built for these insane cameos, and each are used in a way which feels meaningful and provides some of the biggest moments in the movie. I also don't think this movie relies on cameos, as I knew two of them going in and expected others.
I do think behind the cameos, humour, and marvel history, is a very messy plot. It's not necessarily in a bad way, the plot is nothing groundbreaking, but it serves as a way to have these two simply be in a buddy comedy and I think it makes the right choice. It's not to say there's no emotion in this, that comes in the form of Hugh Jackman, who gives a perfect comic accurate wolverine performance that feels far removed from Logan.
In this trilogy, Ryan Renolds has cemented himself as one of those perfect comic book castings, he's just phenomenal as Deadpool and is able to save and enhance a lot of the comedy, I guess it helps it being written in his voice.
It's not without flaws, I think this falls into the same trappings as many MCU movies, an interesting villain who gets little to do, some lore dumps which would be more interesting had they been expanded on more and feels lengthy. However, it's impressive how singular this movie was able to be, I feel like you could watch this without another MCU movie and have fun but also enjoy the references if you are a mad nerd.
Shawn Levy does well with this, his directing feels serviceable but perhaps lacks any form of originality, it fits into the sheen of other MCU movies, where he does shine is in directing action between two characters, when it gets more than this it feels messy and hard to keep track off, killing any sort of enjoyment which is seriously bad in one scene. Personal preference but I also would take score over songs, and his use of songs in this is egregious, some are used in smart ways but it's overused.
For what this was though it was so fun and s/o to spanish cinemas - people were laughing along and popping off
