Echo

21 January 2024

I feel like it says a lot that I'm only reviewing this now. I watched the first episode and was completely disinterested in watching the rest of the series.

I feel like it's a bit insulting for this series to begin with the very first Marvel spotlight series, which was not explained at all to a regular viewer so completely defeating the purpose of the intro, with a series which to really get the most out of you need to have watched no only a previous MCU show but also three seasons of a Netflix show. I know as much as I have watched all of these and feel like for a new viewer it just wouldn't be cohesive.

Given the first episode is basically a recap of Hawkeye it's edited so poorly that I feel like you lack the knowledge of what's going on to get the most out of the relationships. Once you're past the first episode the series does pick up steam a little, but given the show is so short there's really no time to build relationships with many characters. Most supporting characters are underdeveloped or forgotten about, and even Fisk, who people were saying was the best part of the show, their relationship was really underdeveloped.

I really do like how diverse this show was. Letting Marvel expand into a different culture has just allowed more unique stories to be shown on screen and I really enjoyed the parts of the story which dealt with Native people and their beliefs, but I do wish this didn't lead to another superhero with powers. I liked how Echo was just a street level fighter and giving her powers I feel like takes away from this but basing it in her legacy was interesting.

Really the show just suffers from being very uneventful and like it lacks any real reason to watch, the story was basic, the characters are not really developed, and the action is weak. I liked the representation, but I wish we got more about Echo, if you are going to make a show about a character, to not even develop her much feels like a pretty big oversight. It doesn't warrant being a higher rating, minus some blood the action still feels in line with other MCU stuff and is edited perhaps the worst of all MCU shows. If anything the weak MCU shows at least allowed more of an exploration of the main character but this show even lacked that, it's so murky where she aligns, her motivation is missing
