Secret Invasion

5 August 2023

It’s no surprise I really enjoy the MCU. It’s something I grew up with but I also genuinely believe there are projects within it which are worthy of the praise they have received. Since Endgame it seems like the opinion of most people is that it’s on a downward spiral. I really disagree with this as there’s been projects which have been of as good or better quality than previous projects. However, Secret Invasion is the first project to make me consider whether they’ve lost their spark.

Never did I think the MCU would be able to reach the lows of Thor and The Incredible Hulk. I thought that even if they were producing generic formulaic stories, at least that formula had been perfected. When they started to branch out from this formula as well I just had faith in them to do it to as high as standard as other stories. They seem to big to be able to royally fuck something up. I was wrong.

Secret Invasion is perhaps the biggest misstep Marvel have made. It is easily the worst project they’ve ever made. With a premise so intriguing, a darker tone which people have been craving for, a seasoned actor and beloved character and a cast which screams high quality, it surely had to be amazing.

The biggest mistake of this show, is the show. What I mean by this is that Secret Invasion, the premise of espionage based on the beloved comics should just never have been adapted into a show in the first place. Without any revelations, the show just becomes stale. This was apparent a few episodes in when people getting killed had been used as cliffhangers multiple times, characters who were supposed to have audiences questioning what side they were on were instead just convoluted and characters who we’ve known for ages had story introduced which made no sense or they just acted wildly out of character.

It doesn’t help that I also think, despite its amazing cast, it’s possibly one of the worst acted projects they’ve made. Jackson really phones it in, Clarke is bland and Mendelsohn is just fine. However, even though his character at the end is weird Cheadle does a good job and even though we get virtually none of her, Olivia Colman is the only reason to watch the show.

It’s poorly shot, convoluted and honestly it drags. There’s some fun scenes but as a whole project it doesn’t work. It’s so disappointing to set up an interesting story and do nothing with it, what really happens in the show apart from a stupid decision in the last episode that Marvel will need to fix. Nick Fury ends up basically in the same place, it sets up a fun next season but I don’t want it if it’s this level of quality
